William Sweet is currently Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Centre for Philosophy, Theology, and Cultural Traditions, at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is also a Vice President of the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (RVP).
Professor Sweet has taught as a Visiting Scholar at universities in Asia and Europe, including the Catholic University of Lublin (Poland), Fu Jen University and Soochow University in Taiwan, and the Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram in Bangalore (India).
A Past-President of the Canadian Philosophical Association, he is currently President of the World Union of Catholic Philosophical Societies and Presidente d’onore of the Istituto Internazionale Jacques Maritain (Rome).
Professor Sweet has lectured on 6 continents, and has published extensively, particularly in political philosophy, human rights, cross-cultural and intercultural philosophy, ethics, and the history of modern philosophy. He is editor of the journal Philosophy, Culture, and Traditions and an editor of Collingwood and British Idealism Studies. An elected fellow of the Royal Historical Society, the Royal Asiatic Society, and the Royal Society of Canada, he is also the author or editor of some 30 books; among the more recent are Intercultural Dialogue and Human Rights (2011), Responses to the Enlightenment (2012), Migrating Texts and Traditions (2012), and Ideas Under Fire (2013).
